About
The International Association of Marine Investigators, Inc. (IAMI) is a non- profit international organization dedicated to combating marine theft and insurance fraud.
The concept of IAMI began in 1986 when Major Dave MacGillis of the Florida Marine Patrol organized and published the Vessel Theft Investigators National Roster. This roster was intended to assist investigators combat marine theft, a high profit, low risk crime that was out of control, by providing contact persons from various agencies involved in marine theft investigations. The initial roster contained the names of approximately 300 law enforcement, insurance industry, and marine community representatives who had agreed to provide assistance in the investigation of marine theft, insurance fraud, or title fraud cases. In the formative years, training seminars were held in conjunction with the annual training seminars of the Southeast Chapter of the International Association of Auto Theft Investigators. In 1989, a three day training seminar, sponsored by the Southern States Boating Law Administrators, was held in New Orleans. By 1990, the roster had grown to over 700 names, and the time was now right to create a nationwide organization. Major MacGillis was elected the new association’s first president. In 1999 IAMI has issued more than 2000 membership cards to investigators representing the public and private sectors.
