About

The National Ports Authority of South Africa enters the new financial year with renewed vigour to meet the challenges in our endeavour to be recognized as a world-class organization. We have chosen the path and now set our sails to the wind. We are responding to all of these challenges with appropriate capital investments aimed at repositioning our port system as a world class trade platform. We are also going about our intended objective to create additional capacity in the port system. Progress is recorded on a continuous basis to become a strategic partner, not a competitor, with our client base based on a number of principles which primarily talk to Ports becoming key value-adding assets to the supply chain; Entrench a performance driven culture to ensure efficiency, effectiveness and continuous improvement; NPA focusing on BPR & best practices to become world class; and The organisation focusing on enhanced service levels, satisfied client needs & product innovation. To this end a number of processes will take place, the highlights of which will be primarily centered to fulfilling our mandate as described in the Ports Bill namely; The corporatisation of NPA within Transnet A concessioning process to commence with the Durban Container Terminal; and The installation of an interim regulator. The regionalization of trade through free trade zones and trade agreements present huge markets as well as the benefits in economies of scale. Renewed investment into our port system is complemented by high level engagements and interactions on the African continent. Portcon, NPA consultancy arm is blazing a trail from the west coast of Namibia to Ghana, establishing a commercial presence which will see the NPA become a player through a provision of consultancy services and equity participation in a number of African ports. The mission has been chosen, we have set our sail. In the mantre of the NPA: “Obstacles will not become defeat, pursuit will be relentless.” Siyabonga Gama Chief Executive Officer August 2003
