AAPMA is the peak body representing the interests of member ports and marine authorities in Australia and in performing this role we seek to strengthen the general awareness and understanding of ports and their needs amongst all facets of society; the general community to industry and decision-makers alike. This is a role we have performed since 1910 when the major ports commenced regular meetings. Mission Our mission is to provide leadership and support in areas of common interest related to ports, their interfaces and the achievement of their trade facilitation objectives. Objectives The objects of the Association are: Port of Launceston to represent and promote the common interests and views of Australia's ports and marine authorities at a national and international level; to provide advice to, and seek to influence, Governments in all matters that affect ports and marine regulations; to promote public awareness, understanding and support for ports' contribution to national, state and regional economic and social development and their focal role in the integrated transport chain; to provide a forum for; the creation, exchange and evaluation of views on strategic issues relevant to the efficient development, management and use of Australia's ports and maritime facilities; and, sharing information and expertise to encourage the development of efficient practices and techniques for the general management of ports as well as nationally consistent technical policies, practices and regulatory environments; to act both proactively and reactively to meet members' needs in all areas that can affect members' activities and responsibilities; and, such other objectives as the Association may from time to time determine. Operations & Activities In order to achieve our objectives, AAPMA works closely with other peak maritime bodies, relevant industry associations and Federal and State Government agencies. The broad areas of our involvement are: Navigation Port Operations Environment Sea access, land and infrastructure planning Commercial management E-Commerce AAPMA runs seminars and working groups for members on a range of issues. We invite other industry associations to send representatives or to participate as speakers or expert advisers to many of the seminars. We feel strongly that industry associations should work closely together and, where possible, be in a position to give informed and pragmatic advice to the Government on issues that affect current and future operations of ports and port service providers. International Involvement AAPMA keeps a close connection with international maritime developments through our membership of the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH) which is an accredited observer to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and through our close working relationship with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA). Through these associations, AAPMA is able to provide advice and direction on international issues affecting ports and marine regulations that may ultimately influence Australian policies in these areas and could affect vessels that trade to and from Australia. Pilot boarding ship: Port Kembla Membership All government owned ports, several privatised ports and most State marine regulatory authorities are members of the Association. In addition, the Federal Department of Transport and Regional Services and the Royal Australian Navy are Associate Members.
