About

The Homeland Security Institute (HSI) is a not-for-profit, federally-funded Research and Development Center with the following Mission, Objective and Core Competencies: MISSION - To assist the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Science and Technology Directorate and the DHS Operating Elements, in addressing important homeland security issues, particularly those requiring scientific, technical, and analytical expertise. OBJECTIVE - Provide a systems and integrated approach to evaluating homeland security systems and technologies at all stages of development, deployment and use. CORE COMPETENCIES - Systems evaluations, technology assessments, operational assessments, resource and support analyses.

DHS selected Analytic Services Inc to establish and operate the HSI. HSI assists DHS in formulating and addressing important homeland security issues -- particularly those involving policy and security where scientific, technical and analytical expertise is required. Creation of HSI was recommended by the National Research Council (NRC)’s 2002 report “Making the Nation Safer,” and was subsequently mandated by statute in the Homeland Security Act of 2002. ANSER was selected via a competitive process managed by DHS's Under Secretary for Science and Technology. HSI's corporate headquarters is located in Arlington, VA and is managed as a separate operating unit of Analytic Services Inc, the parent firm of the ANSER Institute for Homeland Security. As a continuing service to the homeland security mission, the HSI maintains the HSI website to provide an internet presence for HSI. Site content is established by HSI to serve the needs of its sponsors in DHS. ANSER also publishes the "Journal of Homeland Security" and the e-mail "Weekly Homeland Security Newsletter", with content as needed to appropriately address the additional interests of the HSI. By charter and by action, ANSER has dedicated its efforts to "the public welfare and security of the United States of America" since its creation as a not-for-profit corporation in 1958. We remain committed to this charter and our responsibilities to build on our long-standing legacy of contributions to the public, our nation, and the global community.
