Ship model testing conducted during the design process will help to ensure that when the prototype is built, it will behave as expected in both calm and rough waters. The Ocean Engineering Centre has performed over 400 client-sponsored ship model testing programs examining the performance of a wide range of watercraft including tugs, barges, planing hulls, sailboats, offshore supply boats, hydrofoils, ferries, surface effect ships, submarines and catamarans. Design testing for large motor yachts is a specialty of the Ocean Engineering Centre. Considering the ease of adjusting the shape of a ship's model compared to the daunting task of full-scale modifications, the cost-effectiveness of ship model testing and research is evident. Computational hydrodynamics have not matured sufficiently to replace physical modelling in this application, where a high level of accuracy and confidence is mandatory. A combination of computational and experimental techniques can often be used to good effect, and the Ocean Engineering Centre will facilitate such an approach when appropriate. The Ocean Engineering Centre is equipped with a full-length towing tank which serves as a powerful interactive design tool to aid in the optimization of ship hull lines. The towing tank includes an underwater viewing area to accommodate flow-visualization studies.
