About
The Port of Gdansk is situated at the intersection of the principal European transport routes, providing the most convenient connection between both Central and Eastern Europe and Scandinavia as well as between Western and Eastern Europe. Additionally, for countries such as the Czech Republic, Slovakia, the Ukraine, Belarus Republic and Hungary, the Port of Gdansk provides easy access to the Baltic Sea.
Favourable hydrographic, political and location conditions of the Port of Gdansk have led to the development of a diverse port infrastructure, giving the port a universal character. The Port of Gdansk is divided into two basic parts. The so called Inner Port can accommodate vessels of up to 225 m in length with a maximum draft of 10.2 m. In the outer port, called the Northern Port, the largest vessels that enter the Baltic Sea can be serviced. In this part, vessels with a capacity of up to 150,000 tonnes and a draft up to 15 m can be accommodated along the jetties extending 300 to 600 m in length. Specialised cargo handling terminals, furnished with efficient and modern cargo handling equipment, operate in the port. Such terminals in the Inner Port are the liquid and dry bulk sulphur terminals, the phosphate terminal, Westerplatte Ferry Terminal, the Polferries ferry terminal, the banana handling terminal and the container terminal providing feeder services. The Northern Port features the coal terminal, the liquid fuel terminal, as well as the LPG terminal. In the Inner Port, the remaining wharves have a universal character. It is possible here to handle most general cargo and bulk cargo. It is also here that specialised cargo handling equipment and port infrastructure can be found, enabling the handling of grain, fertilisers, lumber, ore, steel and containers, as well as ro-ro vessel servicing. The Port Free Zone is also located in the Inner Port. The development of other specialised terminals and, the care to maintain the universal character of the port is our main strategic goal. In the future, modern terminals for handling: grain, liquid chemical products and a deep water container and ferry terminal will be put into operation. These terminals together with a distribution centre will co-operate with companies from Poland and abroad. The existing favourable conditions and development in progress give the one-thousand-year-old port a chance to experience its glamour again and to play an even greater role in this part of Europe.
