About
The primary objective of the company is to provide shipowners and operators with cost effective ship management with unparalleled standards of quality and safety. Over almost three decades, not only have we acquired the expertise in the field of ship management, but have also developed a pool of highly qualified and competent staff, both on board as well as ashore. It is through this dedicated and loyal work force of technical superintendents and seafarers, that we are able to achieve economy in operating costs by reducing, or in many cases, eliminating expensive repairs that would normally have to be carried out by shore facilities.
Captain Charles Arthur Joseph Vanderperre was born on 25th March 1922 in Antwerp, Belgium. After having done his cadet training between 1938 and 1940, he was engaged in war service with the Allies. Towards the end of the war in 1944, he joined the Compagnie Maritime Belge (CMB) and by 1949 he had attained the rank of Chief Officer. Receiving command in 1950, he served as a Master on board various vessels operated by CMB and ESSO Tankers, and worked both ashore and at sea for ESSO, Lykes and Texaco. In 1969, Captain Vanderperre joined the Wallem Group of Companies. He then pioneered the idea of establishing a company that would only engage in the third party technical management of ships and became the Managing Director of Wallem Ship Management. Within a short span of four years, Captain Vanderperre succeeded in transforming it from a "one ship" business to a first rank Shipmanagement Company. In late 1972, after the death of Mr. Wallem, he was unable to continue steering the company down the visionary path that had been laid down by its founder. He therefore left the company and started his own Ship Management firm. Captain Vanderperre founded the UNIVAN (UNIted VANderperre) group of companies in 1973. From humble beginnings, with a shrewd sense of business, direction and foresight, Captain Vanderperre steered the company towards bigger and higher goals. Attracting clientele from the world over, UNIVAN provides high quality, low cost ship management services. With the ever fluctuating and volatile trends in the shipping industry, UNIVAN’s fleet size has, at one time, increased to more than 80 vessels. Captain Vanderperre has one hobby, one passion, one devotion: Ship Management. With a team of highly motivated and qualified professionals he has steered the company through good times and bad for more than a quarter of a century and built up the company’s reputation for being a formidable force in the world of ship management.
