Designs: Dave Gerr is a naval architect based in New York City. His firm--Gerr Marine, Inc., founded in 1983--designs both yachts and commercial vessels, and probably works on a wider assortment of boat types than any other design office. Projects currently under construction, on the drawing board, or recently launched include: • 82-foot, single-screw, aluminum voyaging motoryacht, for Kanter Yachts, St. Thomas, Ontario • 76-foot, aluminum, tunnel-drive, ultra shoal, fantail motoryacht, for construction at Kanter Yachts, St. Thomas Ontario. • 65-foot, steel, 149-passenger, dinner/cruise charter boat, for Corn Hill Waterfront and Navigation Foundation, Rochester, NY • 57-foot, aluminum, single-screw motorcruiser, launched at Kanter Yachts, St. Thomas, Ontario • 52-foot, twin-diesel, aluminum cruising ketch, launched at Kanter Yachts, St. Thomas, Ontario • 50-foot, tunnel-drive, wood-epoxy motorcruiser, under construction at Covey Island Boatworks, Petite Rivere, Nova Scotia • 44-foot, high-performance, cored-composite, sailing/cruising catamaran, launched, for Slipstream Yachts, Trumbell, CT • 44-foot, DuraKore, twin-diesel, 40-knot express motorcruiser--hull numbers 1 & 2 launched Feb ‘98 & March ‘99--for mass production at Westbourne Custom Yachts, Oceanside, California • Gerr has served as house designer for Cape Dory/Newport Shipyards. • Previous projects have ranged from 10-foot FRP canoes that came apart to nest in three sections totalling just 48-inches long, to 60-foot class-1 BOC racers, to work on a 90-foot brigantine and 440-foot sail-assisted cruise ships. Magazine Articles and Editor: Having recently completed his 141st article for Offshore magazine--where he has been a contributing editor for over 12 years--Dave Gerr is also a contributing editor for Boatbuilder magazine, and has been a contributing editor for Yachting. In addition, Gerr’s articles have appeared in National Fisherman, Boating, Cruising World, Small Boat Journal, Soundings, Ocean Navigator, Southern Boating, Costal Cruising, Good Old Boat and Powerboat Reports. Books: Dave Gerr is the author of Propeller Handbook (the industry-standard reference on propellers) and of The Nature of Boats--both in multiple printings, and both published by International Marine Publishing Co., a division of McGraw Hill Inc. Additionally, Gerr was retained by Baltek Corporation to analyze, devise, and write the scantling-rule handbook for their proprietary Baltek DuraKore construction.
