Greenshields Shipping Limited was founded in April 1997. In August 1997 the company ordered a new building panamax bulk carrier of 73,000 tons deadweight to be built by Sumitomo Heavy Industries at Yokosuka shipyard in Japan. The vessel, MV Rutland Glen, was delivered in April 1999. She trades worldwide carrying principally cargoes of grain, coal and ore. The company's approach is to combine ownership and operation of safe, efficient and modern vessels with the utilization of innovative price risk tools to optimize earnings in the cyclical and volatile shipping markets. Since delivery of its first vessel the company has outperformed the benchmark panamax earnings index.
