Traditionally the primary intention of most of the ship managers has been to operate ships at reduced cost in order to increase profit margins, irrespective of whether this was healthy for the ship or to the ship-owner's long term interests. The introduction and implementation of the ISM code as well as the STCW 95 code has redefined the role of the ship managers in contemporary shipping. ETA-SMC has been formed in 1996 as a joint venture between two ship owners, the ETA-ASCON Group of Dubai, UAE and the West Asia Maritime Limited, India. As ETA-SMC is a joint venture of two ship-owning companies, the main thrust of ship management is towards maintaining the asset in the best possible condition and ensure operational performance to the satisfaction of charterers. In this pursuit, ETA-SMC will utilise all available resources to provide the best possible technical and personnel management services to the client's (Ship owner/Manager) satisfaction, apart from ensuring safety of life, vessel cargo and avoid any action that would adversely affect the marine environment and cause pollution. ETA Ship Management Co., is certified by Set Nershe Veritas as a ISO 9002 company for "Ship Management Services" and is also a certified "Crew Managing Office" under the DNV "CMO" rules. ETA-SMC has been formed with the intention of providing ship owners quality cost effective management and would provide the following service to its clients. Technical Management of Ships Fleet Personnel Management Advice on Ship Sale and Purchase Ship Inspection and Condition Assessment Ship's insurance, claims and allied services, if required by the owners Complete commercial management of ships, if required by the owners The Technical Management is achieved by Safe and cost effective operation of vessels Ship management as asset management Compliance with all National, International and Statutory regulations Pre-purchase Inspection Ship Vetting/Assessment Maintenance of Safety Management System The Personnel Management includes inter-alia, the following: Pre-employment interviews, medical examination and confirming candidates' qualifications for post vis-a-vis STCW 95 requirements Post employment follow-up as appraisal reports, from vessel/superintendents Determining Education and training needs Advising Technical Division / Clients with respect to candidates suitability for promotion. The Technical and Personnel Divisions are manned by highly motivated and competent personnel. The Technical and Personnel Divisions are free to render their services to the clients jointly and separately. It is the intention of the management to restrict the ships under management owned by either the JV - partners or third party owners to a number which will allow ETA - SMC to provide a healthy and quality service to all its clients without unduly stretching the resources. The ETA Ship Management Company has its Safety Management System certified by "Det Norske Veritas AS", Norway, as well as the Director General of Shipping, Government of India.
