FEAP is a Federation of 26 National Aquaculture Associations from 20 European countries and is a representative organisation for European aquaculture; member of the Advisory Committee on Fisheries and Aquaculture and observer to the FAO.
The Federation of European Aquaculture Producers (FEAP) is an international organisation that is composed of the National Aquaculture Associations of European countries. Membership of the Federation is restricted to National Aquaculture Associations. In certain cases, countries have National Associations for defined species (e.g. the United Kingdom has National Associations for Trout, Salmon..) while others have National Associations for all species (e.g. Italy and France have National Aquaculture Associations that incorporate all species). At present, the FEAP is composed primarily of Associations concerned with finfish production. The basic aims of the Federation are: to develop and establish a common policy on questions relating to the production and the commercialisation of aquaculture species are reared professionally. to make known to the appropriate authorities the common policies envisaged above. For the purposes of consultation, the FEAP maintains a policy of constructive dialogue and transparency. In order that this policy is respected, it has established formal links to the following institutions and organisations: The Commission of the EU (DG Fish) - Member of the Advisory Committee on Fisheries and Aquaculture The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), European Inland Fisheries Advisory Commission (EIFAC) - Observer General Fisheries Council for the Mediterranean (GFCM) - Observer Confederation of European Agriculture (CEA) - Member Working Group for Aquaculture of the COPA/COGECA - Observer Maritime Industries Forum - Member of Panel 2 - Marine Resources European Aquaculture Interface (ad-hoc Group), with European Aquaculture Society AquaTT CIHEAM FAO The original founder members were the national producer Associations of France, Belgium, Germany and Italy who, following a meeting in Geneva in 1969, created the 'Federation Européenne de Salmoniculture' which was registered in France. At that time, the major species concerned was trout. Additional trout producing nations of importance are now represented by Denmark, Spain and the United Kingdom. As salmon farming developed in importance, the FES expanded to include, particularly, the Nordic countries of Norway, Finland and Sweden. Additional representation of this sector was obtained with the membership of the Associations of the United Kingdom, Ireland, Iceland and the Faeroe Islands. In 1994, recognising the growing importance of seabass and seabream farming in the Mediterranean, the FES changed its constitution to be able to include all aspects of European aquaculture under its umbrella and became the FEAP. Since that time, the National Associations of Greece, Spain, Cyprus, Turkey and Malta have become members of the FEAP. In 1995, the applications of the Associations of the Czech Republic and Poland (Trout) were accepted by the Assembly, representing the first Associations from Eastern Europe to become members of the FEAP. The most recent members of the Federation are the Fish Farmers Association of the Netherlands, NEVEVI the Hungarian Fish Farmers Association, HAKI At present, the FEAP numbers 26 different Associations from 20 European countries whose representatives regularly address the numerous issues that affect the professional production sector. The FEAP encourages a policy of openness and transparency in its consultations, analysing and developing the issues that affect aquaculture producers throughout Europe. Such matters are debated within 2 statutory annual meetings, the Annual General Meeting (held in the spring) and the Presidents’ Meeting (held in the autumn). The location of these meetings rotates on a basis of co-organisation with the Member Associations of the FEAP.
