Lloyd’s Register is an independent risk management organisation. Members of the Lloyd’s Register Group provide services to help clients achieve their business goals, while optimising safety and quality and preserving the environment. Our expertise and activities cover shipping, oil and gas, railways, and other land-based industries. The organisation was founded in London in 1760 to survey merchant ships and ‘classify’ them according to their condition, and classification is still our principal activity in the marine sector. The Lloyd’s Register Group operates independently of any government or other body and is non-profit distributing. We have around 200 offices worldwide and 5,000 employees.

Our marine business principally involves classification of ships, which sets standards of quality and reliability during design, construction and operation. Ships must conform with the standards required by our Rules and are inspected to ensure they comply. The Lloyd’s Register Group also undertakes statutory inspections connected with international shipping conventions and codes. With additional services, we help shipowners and operators understand risks and improve business performance. In other transport and industry sectors the Lloyd’s Register Group provides independent risk management solutions designed to optimise asset performance in oil and gas; infrastructure (rail, road, air, and inter-modal transport); utilities; pharmaceuticals; general engineering and manufacturing. Management systems services are provided by Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance (LRQA) one of the world’s largest international certification bodies. LRQA helps clients use management systems to reduce their risks and improve their business performance.
