The HUT ship laboratory in Otaniemi is the only university level ship building institute in Finland. The facilities used in education and research include 130 m long model basin with a depth of x 5.5 and breath 11 m. The speed of measurement carriage is 8 m/s Ice model basin with 40 x 40 m dimensions that permits testing with up to 70 mm thick special model ice Both basins include wave generation equipment. They are equipped with advanced instrumentation and are served by an efficient model manufacturing shop Navigation simulation centre where the steering and movements of various ship types can be studied and trained. The simulator training in confined water ways and harsh weather conditions raises the safety of sea transportation Well equipped lecture, excercise and computer station rooms Field measurement are an essential part of the research. Frequently the testing laboratory is actually in a luxury cruiser of multi-year ice field in the Arctic Canada. Four professor are directing the ship research and education: The professors in Shipbuilding technology and Arctic ship and sea technology as well as associate professors in Ship hydrodynamics and Ship machineries. They are also guiding the group of some 10 post graduate students, who work on research projects. Many of these projects have been financed by industrial companies.
