About

FarSounder, Inc. is a marine sonar manufacturing company based in Providence, RI. Its mission is to become the world market leader in delivering 3-D, forward-looking sonar systems for navigation and obstacle avoidance. FarSounder’s sonar systems enable mariners to receive an accurate, real-time picture of the depths and underwater-submerged obstacles immediately ahead of their vessels.

FarSounder designs, manufactures and sells sonar systems that deliver the most critical information a ship operator needs: an accurate, real-time picture of the depths and obstacles immediately ahead of a vessel. FarSounder’s systems give ships the ability to “see-ahead,” underwater, in true 3-D – range, bearing and depth. This new marine navigation technology provides mariners with precise information on the bottom depth for a large area of water, including discerning objects on the sea floor, at the surface, and even sea animals swimming through the water. The forward-looking sonar technology has the capability to provide information about the sea bottom and other in-water obstacles at navigationally significant ranges ahead of the vessel. Although forward-looking sonars in various forms exist, there is no commercial system capable of providing depth information forward of the ship at navigationally useful ranges. Based on research first developed at University of Rhode Island’s Ocean Technology Center, FarSounder’s forward-looking, obstacle-avoidance sonar system has three effective components: 1) the wet-end, also called a sonar head, which is mounted on the ships hull and transmits the sonar signals and digitizes the received signal responses; 2) the power module, which is the electronics package that is responsible for generating and amplifying the transmit signals and processing the sonar data; and 3) the user interface, which either a laptop or a standalone display
