Janet Peck, AMS, REM, MIIMS has personally completed well over 2500 cargo and hull surveys, some of which have involved extensive cargo damage as well as marine structures. Condensation damage, stowage, shifting of cargo, fire and flooding. Additionally, she has worked as Hazmat incident manager for over 300 incidents. Janet has also conducted numerous loading and securing surveys (both container and breakbulk). Janet is currently an Adjunct Professor at the State University of New York, Maritime College where I teach marine surveying (Hull, Cargo and Yacht disciplines) as well as marine security and other similar programs.

Ms. Peck began this company in 1969 and has remained at the helm since. Maritime Bureau Inc. is a 100 % women owned firm and normally consisting of less then 3 employees, with over 20 associates; it has in time of crisis grown to as many as 1500 employees. College: University of Maryland while serving with the USAF, New York University and Transylvania College. Subsequent to being employed by Royal Globe Insurance Company, Ocean Marine Department, where the knowledge of law was required. As a consequence I completed LaSalle Schools’ Law courses earning a “certificate” with acceptance as an LLB in two states. Maritime Bureau, Inc. (formally Eastern Marine Surveyors) was founded in December 1969; to provide quality marine and cargo surveys to our principles. While self-employed I earned a certificate from the Institute of Marine Design (Camden, Maine), in Naval Architecture. Several groups, including the Society of Naval Architects to which I have been a “MEMBER” since 1980 recognize this certificate. I have also completed courses of study at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. I have been a member of the NFPA since 1984, which is an organization “dedicated to safeguarding man and his environment against the hazards of fire”. I hold a Pilots license, endorsed for Instrument. To obtain it I completed over a year of specialized training (including extensive meteorological) culminating in examinations by the Federal Government. I have completed such additional studies as Forensic Engineering and Expert Witness training through continuing courses provided by The Society of Naval Architects, “Developments in Georgia Environmental Law” through Federal Publication Seminars, and more. Recently the National Registry of Environmental Professionals granted me the REM designation, after having sat for a lengthy written examination, and verification of credentials by the examining committee. I also hold active memberships in the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors with disciplines in Cargo, Blue water. I am a fully accredited member of The International Institute of Marine Surveyors. I am also providing consulting on Marine security issues in view of the “Maritime Transportation Anti-Terrorism Act Of 2002” and will delivering a paper on terminal, cargo and vessel security at the 2003 International Association of Marine Investigators training program on February 24th & 25th. I have completed well over 2000 yacht damage surveys, and I have also worked as pollution incident manager for over 300 incidents including the oil spill, that of the barge “Morris J Berman”, in San Juan 1994. Major incidents handled: M.V. “FEDERAL RHINE” March 1990 DRI cargo fire, I was placed in command of vessel, brought same into Baltimore to fight fire, extinguished fire and extracted cargo without significant damage to hull. Acted as hull surveyor for owners and underwriters for damage assessment. Worked fitting out and sea trials after repairs. M.V. “MEMPHIS” June 1990 Engine room fire. Acted as hull surveyor for owners, P&I and underwriters for damage assessment. Worked fitting out and sea trials after repairs. M.V. “GULF SPEED” November 1990 - 2 tank containers leaking hazardous material on board vessel. Responsibility for containment and remediation. M.V. “MEMPHIS” January 1991 Oil Spill - Responsible for response and remediation Savannah River. Mega Yacht “BRAVE HEART” Acted as hull surveyor for owners and underwriters for damage assessment. Acted for oversight in repair yard, and sea trials after repairs. T.B. “MORRIS J BERMAN” - I have been credited by the USCG as being responsible for the second largest pollution clean-up in US history, that of the T.B. “MORRIS J BERMAN” oil spill in San Juan PR. in 1994. Handled emergency repairs and re-floating for salvage. The M.V.”NEPTUNE JADE” collision / hazardous material spill in 1997 Marine structure damage and collapse, cause and extent investigation and salvage of both the marine structure and the hazardous material. Hull damage surveyor for P&I for damage assessment. M.V. “MERCHANT PATROIT – November 1997 flooding of vessel and crew abandonment, with major shift of cargo and flooding of holds. Damage and cause assessment. Damaged Cargo Crane, April 1997 – Cause and analysis of extend of damage to hull. Client major insurance carrier with resultant ship damage. M.V. “CONTSHIP” Major heavy weather investigation and damage assessment acted as hull surveyor for o underwriters for damage assessment. Worked fitting out and sea trials after repairs. M.V.”AMERIGO VESPUCCI” ship collision investigation M.V. “YUCATAN” Major ship fire and hazardous material release. US Department of the Navy (JAG) Collision between Submarine and surface vessel, damage assessment to submarine. Standard Shipping – On going project develop and maintain Shipboard operations plans for fleet and maintain compliance in accordance with US and IMO regulations. 1995 to present Bay Point Marina – Structural damage due to hurricane – Damage assessment and re-construction repairs specifications and cost. September, 2001 Marine fuel structure and dock system condition and damage assessment and costing US Department of the Navy – JAG August 2001 I have been published/presented several times regarding condensation, cargo damages and pollution responses.
