About
The Antwerp Maritime Academy (Hogere Zeevaartschool) is the only institution in Belgium providing maritime training on academic level. The premises are situated between the city and the port of Antwerp, near one of the older locks giving access to the docks. The academy depends from the Ministry of Education, Flemish Government and is associated with the University of Antwerp, Hogeschool Antwerpen, Karel de Grote-Hogeschool and Plantijnhogeschool. In total the association counts more than 25.000 students.
Two kinds of training are given permanently. The « deck » section prepares students for a seagoing career as deck officer (mate) and captain (master) on board vessels of all tonnage classes. The « engine » section prepares the students for a seagoing career as engineer officer on board vessels of all power classes. Candidates for training enter the academy after an examination of their aptitude for the future career they plan. They should posess a diploma or certificate of satisfactory secundary studies or higher. They are trained in the deck section during 4 years, or in the engineering section during 3 years. After satisfactory completion of the training, the candidates receive a diploma of « junior officer deck department » or « junior officer engineering department » as appropriate.
