About

History & Membership Profile The North of England P. & I. Association was formed in 1860 by a group of shipowners based in Newcastle upon Tyne. The Association is one of the oldest P. & I. Associations and for the first 100 years of its existence dealt almost exclusively with British flag vessels. Until the 1980's we did not actively seek new business but it was recognised at that time that a wider spread of ships from different countries would strengthen the Association. Management Costs The North of England specialises in a high level of service and stability of calls. The North of England's overheads are very competitive. Although one of the reasons for this is the lower costs incurred in Newcastle it should also be stressed that, unlike most of the other major Clubs, The North of England does not employ a commercial Management Company to run the Club but instead employs North Insurance Management Limited, a company totally owned by North of England. Club Philosophy The North of England is very proud of its personal relationship with all of the Members. There is a substantial Board of Directors which represents the major interests in the Club and this Board meets to set the policy for the Association. Service is always important with the Association and the shipowner Members are asked to look upon the Club as an extension of their own office. In addition to contact by telephone, fax., etc. the Association's Management and Staff regularly travel the world to visit Members. Training & Education The Association holds regular Seminars to acquaint its Members with current issues in P. & I. insurance and also publishes an annual report and newsletters which keep the membership up-to-date with the workings of the Club and any other matters which are relevant to P. & I. An in-house training programme has been devised for people from shipowners' offices who can spend time working in all departments of the Association on a structured training programme; this programme also includes visits to maritime lawyers, technical colleges, ship-yards, etc. The Association, in conjunction with the local Marine College, has also prepared what is believed to be the first correspondence course in P. & I. insurance. This course is aimed mainly at ships' mariners in an effort to reduce the level of claims currently being experienced in the P. & I. market. In a further attempt to reduce P. & I. costs the Association has actively supported the Nautical Institute in preparing a book called "The Mariner's Role in Collecting Evidence"; the book has been written under the chairmanship of Captain Philip Anderson, the Association's Loss Prevention Manager.
