About

The first Clipper Company was incorporated in 1972. The Clipper Group controls approximately 150 vessels, of which approximately 50 vessels are fully or partly owned in collaboration with investors and other ship owning groups. The total fleet ranges in size from 1,000 dwt to 75,000 dwt carrying in excess of 30 million tons of cargo per annum. The Group is a member of BIMCO. The vessels are entered with the Skuld, Gard and other major P&I Clubs. The main bankers are: Fortis Bank Rotterdam - Unibank A/S, Copenhagen - Danish Ship Finance, Copenhagen - The Royal Bank of Scotland, London - Chase Bank of Texas, Houston and UBS AG of Bern.

In the 1840's the freight rates for Chinese tea rose from $10.00 to $60.00, suddenly making it profitable to build and operate ships that looked more like racing vessels than traditional cargo carriers. This new type of ships was called Clipper Ships. They were not a specific design, they were a state of mind. The Clipper Ships ranged in size from a few hundred tons to over 4000 tons. The ships did not only cut down the transit time considerably, enabling the merchants to bring their goods to the markets in record time, they also ensured that the cargo was delivered in a much better condition. Today's "Clipper Ships" are new and innovative vessels of designs that ensure flexibility to meet the ever-changing need of shippers in key and niche markets. Like the Clipper Ships of the nineteenth and twentieth century, today's Clipper Ships bring the merchants' goods to the markets in a timely and safe manner but at a more competitive freight rate. The Clipper Group is an international shipping consortium comprised of Ship Owning, Commercial Ship Management, Trading, Agency, Stevedoring and Investment companies. The first Clipper Company was incorporated in 1972. The Group has grown continuously and presently includes over 70 separate companies conducting business worldwide.
