Not withstanding their obvious collectability, ship models have, through the ages, formed an intrinsic part of the world's shipbuilding industry. It is still normal practice for the shipyard to provide a scale model of the proposed vessel. This can be for tank testing, design and development, marketing, or boardroom purposes. Engine room layouts and internal piping models are also an indispensible tool when designing the complex machinery space of modern ships. In addition, accurate scale models of both historic and modern vessels are supplied to many major U.K. museums.
