Calcutta port started operations in 1870. It was initially designed by the then British Government in line with the Port of London, to take care of its business and colonial interest. Despite innumerable odds faced by the port since its inception, it used to enjoy a premier position amongst the major ports of India and accounted for nearly 50% of the sea-borne trade till independence. However, with the rapid industrialisation in Western India concomitant to gradual deterioration of the industrial sector in Eastern India, the glory of this grand port has been outstripped. Calcutta port, the only riverine major port in India has two docking arms the Calcutta Dock System (CDS) and Haldia Dock Complex (HDC). CDS with its impounded docking arrangement, is located within Calcutta city and connected to Bay of Bengal through 156 nautical miles long navigational channel through river Hooghly. The Hooghly channel, longest ever riverine waterway used by ocean-going vessels, is infamous for its traps, siltations and known to maritime world as one of the highly unpredictable and risky navigational route. HDC is located at the bank of river Hooghly and Haldi, has started operations in 1968 as a satellite port of CDS. It also operates through impounded docking arrangement due to low river draft. The port serves to a vast hinterland, which includes states of West Bengal, Bihar, Orissa, Eastern Uttar Pradesh, states of North-East India and the two land-locked nations of Nepal and Bhutan. Future plan Calcutta Port has outlined expansion plan for handling 50 million tonnes of cargo by 2000-01. The port is considering a fourth oil jetty to handle projected POL traffic.

The Port of Chennai, located on the North-East tip of the state of Tamil Nadu, is an artificial harbour on the Coromandel coast of Southern India. The port serves to a well-developed hinterland extended over the Southern states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The port was conceived long back in 1875 with the construction of harbours. During the period of Second World War between 1939-45, the port felt acute congestion due to high influx of materials. This had driven the need for capacity enhancement of the port to cater to the increasing levels of cargo movement. The Government initiated a decisive approach towards capacity expansion of the port. Jawahar Dock was then commissioned in 1964 with the financial assistance of World Bank. An outer harbour was commissioned in 1971 as a part of the ports continuous development. The new member of the Chennai Port family was christened as Bharati Dock. During the post-independence era, the port of Chennai has evolved as one of the major container handling ports of the country conforming to all international standards. The port of Chennai is fast emerging as a preferred destination for export of non-traditional cargo like cars and industrial boilers. Future plan The port has created 10,000 sq. metres of concreted yard for parking of cars and is looking forward to become a specialised car exporting port of the country.

Our immediate predecessor, McMoRan Oil & Gas Co., commenced operations in May 1994 following the distribution of all of its common stock to the stockholders of Freeport-McMoRan Inc., its former parent company. The purpose of that transaction was to allow McMoRan Oil & Gas to rebuild, with essentially the same management and exploration team, the oil and gas exploration business previously conducted by Freeport-McMoRan Inc. Freeport-McMoRan Inc. and its predecessors had engaged in oil and gas exploration, development and production activities since the early 1970s, and during the 1980s it was among the most active drillers in the Gulf of Mexico . As part of an asset restructuring program to raise new capital to exploit other significant business opportunities (including the development of a world class copper and gold deposit in Indonesia discovered in 1988), Freeport-McMoRan Inc. sold numerous assets in various transactions during the late 1980s and early 1990s. These asset sales included the vast majority of its producing oil and gas properties. Sales proceeds from these properties totaled approximately $1.3 billion. As a result, McMoRan Oil & Gas commenced operations in 1994 with an extensive geological and geophysical data base, as well as extensive technical and operational expertise, but with only a small group of exploration prospects and limited financial resources. Following its separation from Freeport-McMoRan Inc., McMoRan Oil & Gas pursued a business plan of exploring for and producing oil and gas, primarily in the Gulf of Mexico and onshore in the Gulf Coast area. The Port of Buffalo, owned and operated by Gateway Metroport, ranks 28th amoung all U.S. seaports and seventh of the Great Lakes ports. Located at the eastern end of Lake Erie, it is 22 miles from Port Colborne, Ontario, the Welland Canal's terminus on Lake Erie, and is the first major U.S. port of call encountered on entering the Great Lakes. Its central location within 500 miles of the major population and distribution centers of the Northeast and North Central States, and within 500 miles of 75 percent of the Canadian population, makes it ideal for industry and distribution. The Port has excellent facilities: piers with 27 feet of water (Seaway standard depth) alongside, can accommodate seven vessels simultaneously. Two hundred acres located on or near deep water are set aside for bulk cargo storage; self unloaders and conventional bulk carriers can discharge and load while sheltered by the harbor breakwall. More and more shippers are taking advantage of the Port's excellent bulk distribution facilities. In addition to a number of heavy fork lift trucks, two portable conveyor belt systems and other modern material handling equipment, the Port recently acquired a 230 ton American crawler crane and a heavy duty front end loader. The crawler crane, when "married" to the Port's existing 50 ton LeTourneau gantry crane, offers dramatic lifting capability. The LeTourneau, with its lifting capacity of 50 tons at 40 feet, has the accessories: hook, bridle, electo-magnet, sling and spreaders, to move any type of cargo quickly and economically. Its high mobility enables it to serve both the general cargo and bulk piers. A highly mobile Kolberg conveyor system is also available. Foreign Trade Zone No. 23 is in operation at the Port and is just about at capacity. A satellite foreign trade zone has been opened near the Greater Buffalo International Airport and in Amherst. The Port of Buffalo is a member of the Council of Upstate Ports of New York, a forum for discussion and resolution of problems common to New York's upstate port; it played a leading role in forming the Port of Buffalo Users Group, a cooperative unit formed by local shippers for consolidation of cargoes and inducement of regularly scheduled steamship services. The history of the Gateway Port of Buffalo over the past decade has shown steady improvement and expansion of Port facilities. Port Freeport is a thriving port with all the necessary components to be a full service port. Port Freeport’s 45 foot deep, 400 foot wide and 3.5 mile long channel quickly brings in vessels up to 80,000 dead weight tons from the Gulf of Mexico to the harbor. Port Freeport is currently implementing an aggressive expansion program that has dredged our deep berthing area to 70 feet and we are now actively working toward the extension of “A” dock to 750 feet. The port has a Gottwald 280 multi-purpose mobile crane, which has the capacity to perform twenty-five container, moves per hour or be outfitted to handle lifts in excess of 100 tons. Port Freeport has continued to acquire equipment and proceed with expansion plans to provide enhanced services to its clientele. Contrary to some larger Gulf ports, Port Freeport still offers personal, tailor-made service to its customers. In addition, Port Freeport has on site warehouse and transit shed space in excess of 400,000 square feet. Foreign Trade Zone #149 is active at Port Freeport. The FTZ permits unique incentives to Port Freeport’s clientele. An active FTZ may allow for the deferral, reduction or possible elimination of duties. Port Freeport maintains an inventory of developable properties that could meet most any needs of its’ clients. In 1999, Port Freeport handled more than 872,000 metric tons of neo-bulk, breakbulk, containers and liquid bulk commodities. Port Freeport is truly a multi-purpose port.
