Founded by Bruce Doughty and Bruce Washburn, the yard began building fishing boats in 1977. Since then, the yard has continued to prosper by diversifying its capabilities, developing innovative designs and building techniques, and reaching out to new markets. Washburn & Doughty now has a resumé that boasts the deliveries of a diverse mix of commercial passenger vessels, tugs, fishing boats, barges, ferries and research vessels to owners from Lunenburg, Nova Scotia to Bridgetown, Barbados. New construction takes place within a 50,000 square foot facility that houses three building bays and shops for electrical, piping, joinery and drafting work. The building ways and fabrication areas are serviced by seven bridge cranes with combined capacities of up to 20 tons. In addition, protected deep water dockage provides ample space for in-water outfitting, repairs and conversions. Washburn & Doughty personnel are experienced designing and building to ABS Rules for Vessels Under 200 feet, US Coast Guard requirements including subchapters H, K and T, Lloyds classification, IEEE-45 Electrical standards, US Public Health Service regulations and Canadian Coast Guard requirements. The yard can build to suit a customer's plans, or its experienced in-house architects can custom design a boat. Washburn & Doughty uses CAD/CAM, and a Linde CM 250 numerically controlled plasma cutting machine, in the design/construction process to rapidly turn an owner's ideas into the finished product. Located on the beautiful Damariscotta River in mid-coast Maine, Washburn & Doughty invites potential customers to visit the yard. Our hours of operation are Monday - Thursday 7:00AM -5:30PM and Friday 7:00AM - 2:00PM.

Partners in America's Trade The liner shipping industry is a vital, contributing partner in America's foreign trade and economic growth. Over the past ten years, U.S. international trade in goods has doubled and rapid growth is expected in the next decade as well. Last year, U.S. oceanborne trade amounted to more than $700 billion. Liner shipping, with its network of vessels, containers, port terminals and information systems, handled two-thirds of that trade and did so smoothly, efficiently and at rates lower than those fifteen years ago. These low rates enhance the competitiveness of U.S. products in world markets and bring a variety of quality goods to our homes at low cost. Your VCR was carried from Hong Kong for about one dollar; ocean shipping services from Asia added about 40 cents to the price of the sneakers you're wearing; and it cost three cents to put that bottle of German beer in your refrigerator. The liner shipping industry is a constant innovator- linking American businesses directly and efficiently with their customers around the world on a door-to-door basis. The industry is also an essential investor in the transportation system that carries the United States' international commerce. Liner carriers have invested over $150 billion in transportation assets currently in service worldwide and, if trade projections are accurate, they will need to invest billions of dollars more in ships and equipment to service trade growth over the next ten years. With confidence in how public policy will affect our industry, members of the World Shipping Council can build on this partnership in serving America's trade and keeping the country's economy strong and growing.
