In its formative years, the Society developed its technical committees structure, a call for at least one annual conference, and peer-reviewed publications. Early Technological Committees included Underwater Photography, Marine Biology, Undersea Vehicles, Education and Careers in the Marine Sciences, Oceanographic Data and Information, Oceanographic Instrumentation, and Mineral Resources.
