BOYD Steamship Corporation is the oldest and largest ships’ agency at the Panama Canal. Founded by William Y. Boyd, who was later joined by his brother, Robert J. Boyd, and General George W. Goethals, the famed builder of the Panama Canal. Goethals was an active partner in the company until his retirement in 1926. In 1919, in the city of Colon, the Boyds opened the first bonded warehouse, precursor of the now flourishing and international famous Colon Free Zone. During this period, the Boyd Corporation operateda fleet of shipstransporting cargoes throughout the Caribbean and down the coast of South America. During the Second World War, they operated some 40 oil tankers out of the Port of Balboa. Broadwater Energy has been formed as a joint venture between TransCanada Pipelines Corporation (TCPL USA LNG, Inc.) and Shell US Gas & Power LLC to address energy shortages threatening the Long Island Sound region of New York and Connecticut. Broadwater plans to build and install a facility resembling a large ship, to be moored in Long Island Sound between CT and NY. The facility will receive imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from LNG tankers. LNG will be "re-gasified" at the floating facility and transported by underwater pipeline connecting to the existing Iroquois gas pipeline for further distribution. By 2010 Broadwater would be safely and reliably delivering a large new supply of clean-burning natural gas to homes, businesses and power generation plants.
