It has a mooring front of 754 feet, a classification yard of 226,042 sq. ft., and service and storage facilities; it is capable of operating year round with a draft of 9 feet. This port is protected against fluvial erosion during the rising water season by a system of coastal defence formed by a watertight clay embankment covered by bunk mattresses and stone gabions. It has railroad access from the Belgrano railroad.

It was created by Law No. 11.414 of the Buenos Aires Province Congress, thus complying with the provisions set forth in article 12 of Harbor Activity Act No. 24.093, enforced by the National Congress. Since September 1st, 1993 the Port Consortium is in charge of the administration and exploitation of the Bahía Blanca harbor complex. In fact, it became the first independent harbor in Argentina, under the National Government's umbrella of privatizations and transfers of all the Argentine harbor systems, which had belonged to the State for decades. The Board of Directors has nine appointed members representing several sectors concerned with the harbor operation and development.
