The Royal Dutch/Shell Group of Companies - usually known as Shell - has grown out of an alliance, made in 1907 between Royal Dutch Petroleum Company in The Netherlands and The "Shell" Transport and Trading Company, p.l.c., in the UK. Today the Group has five core businesses of which Exploration and Production is one. The others are Oil Products, Chemicals, Gas and Power, and Renewables.
Shell companies have been exploring for and producing hydrocarbons for over a century. Today, they have interests in exploration and production ventures in 34 countries and employ around 28,500 staff.
Exploration and production is the foundation of the petroleum industry. Sometimes known as the `upstream' business, it extends from the search for hydrocarbons, through to the delivery of oil or gas to the refinery.
