When 20-year-old Danish blacksmith Vilhelm Petersen sailed into Boston Harbor, little did he know that his journey would lead to the establishment of American Tool Companies, Inc. In 1902, "Bill" Petersen settled in Minden, Nebraska, where he worked for a fellow Danish blacksmith, keeping horses shod, plow shares sharpened and wagons repaired. Bill Petersen was an inventor at heart. With the introduction of the automobile and farm tractor, blacksmithing was on the decline. During the long Nebraska winters, Petersen experimented with his ideas. In 1921, he invented and patented a unique wrench with a "vise-like" grip. By 1924, Petersen had refined his invention by adding a locking lever. He patented the enhanced tool and gave it an innovative name that would become world famous: VISE-GRIP® locking pliers. He registered the distinctive clasped hands logo, a symbol that today represents the most recognized hand tool brand in the world. American Tool Companies, Inc., led by Allen Petersen, the founder’s grandson, has evolved into a leading global manufacturer and marketer of hand tools, cutting tools and power tool accessories. The company has more than 4,400 employees and manufacturing facilities throughout North America, Europe, Brazil, and the Pacific Rim. Today, its product lines include VISE-GRIP locking pliers, clamps and wrenches, IRWIN® wood boring and cutting tools, QUICK-GRIP® clamping products, RECORD® hand tools, MARPLES® woodworking tools, JACK® hand saws, POWERPRESS® pipe clamps, TURBOMAX® drill bits, PROSNIP® snips, MARATHON® and SPRINT® saw blades, UNIBIT® step drills, HANSON® taps, dies and drills, CHESCO® hex tools, SPEEDBOR® wood boring bits, and STRAIT-LINE® marking tools. Quite a dramatic change from the day a young Danish immigrant traveled to America and established his place in history. Calcutta, India, India

Calcutta port started operations in 1870. It was initially designed by the then British Government in line with the Port of London, to take care of its business and colonial interest. Despite innumerable odds faced by the port since its inception, it used to enjoy a premier position amongst the major ports of India and accounted for nearly 50% of the sea-borne trade till independence. However, with the rapid industrialisation in Western India concomitant to gradual deterioration of the industrial sector in Eastern India, the glory of this grand port has been outstripped. Calcutta port, the only riverine major port in India has two docking arms the Calcutta Dock System (CDS) and Haldia Dock Complex (HDC). CDS with its impounded docking arrangement, is located within Calcutta city and connected to Bay of Bengal through 156 nautical miles long navigational channel through river Hooghly. The Hooghly channel, longest ever riverine waterway used by ocean-going vessels, is infamous for its traps, siltations and known to maritime world as one of the highly unpredictable and risky navigational route. HDC is located at the bank of river Hooghly and Haldi, has started operations in 1968 as a satellite port of CDS. It also operates through impounded docking arrangement due to low river draft. The port serves to a vast hinterland, which includes states of West Bengal, Bihar, Orissa, Eastern Uttar Pradesh, states of North-East India and the two land-locked nations of Nepal and Bhutan. Future plan Calcutta Port has outlined expansion plan for handling 50 million tonnes of cargo by 2000-01. The port is considering a fourth oil jetty to handle projected POL traffic.

For over 150 years each compass manufactured by E.S. Ritchie & Sons, Inc. was recorded by serial number in hand written ledgers. These ledgers are still maintained at the Ritchie factory, shown above, located in Pembroke, MA USA. The first successful liquid dampened compass was awarded a U.S. Patent in 1860. It is just one of the compasses that we see highlighted in company literature dating back to the formation of E.S. Ritchie and Sons. Early compass dials were hand painted using egg white based paint for the background and India ink for the graduations. This photo shows three different types of early float chamber dials. Today's dials are printed using modern lithographic processes on extremely light aluminum or composite dials. Ritchie manufactured all the US Navy standard compasses for over forty years. The dial on the left shows the prominent float chamber which reduced weight on the pivot, reducing wear and greatly improving performance. The four vertical rods are actually bundles of needle magnets which gave this compass the power to lock on to magnetic north. Ritchie Compasses have won many awards for design and engineering excellence in the past 150 years. An early Ritchie liquid filled compass with a floating dial is exhibited in the Albert Museum of Science and Industry in England, proudly displayed along with a collection of nautical instruments created by the famous Lord Kelvin.
