The name derives from the original trading title of "The Great Grimsby Coal, Salt and Tanning Company". Coal to fuel the galley stoves; salt to preserve the food; tanning to waterproof the sails, ropes and nets. The company was founded in 1873 as a co-operative of vessel owners who required a reliable continuity of goods and services so that their vessels could put to sea and ply their trade.
