Buffalo, NY, United States

The Port of Buffalo, owned and operated by Gateway Metroport, ranks 28th amoung all U.S. seaports and seventh of the Great Lakes ports. Located at the eastern end of Lake Erie, it is 22 miles from Port Colborne, Ontario, the Welland Canal's terminus on Lake Erie, and is the first major U.S. port of call encountered on entering the Great Lakes. Its central location within 500 miles of the major population and distribution centers of the Northeast and North Central States, and within 500 miles of 75 percent of the Canadian population, makes it ideal for industry and distribution. The Port has excellent facilities: piers with 27 feet of water (Seaway standard depth) alongside, can accommodate seven vessels simultaneously. Two hundred acres located on or near deep water are set aside for bulk cargo storage; self unloaders and conventional bulk carriers can discharge and load while sheltered by the harbor breakwall. More and more shippers are taking advantage of the Port's excellent bulk distribution facilities. In addition to a number of heavy fork lift trucks, two portable conveyor belt systems and other modern material handling equipment, the Port recently acquired a 230 ton American crawler crane and a heavy duty front end loader. The crawler crane, when "married" to the Port's existing 50 ton LeTourneau gantry crane, offers dramatic lifting capability. The LeTourneau, with its lifting capacity of 50 tons at 40 feet, has the accessories: hook, bridle, electo-magnet, sling and spreaders, to move any type of cargo quickly and economically. Its high mobility enables it to serve both the general cargo and bulk piers. A highly mobile Kolberg conveyor system is also available. Foreign Trade Zone No. 23 is in operation at the Port and is just about at capacity. A satellite foreign trade zone has been opened near the Greater Buffalo International Airport and in Amherst. The Port of Buffalo is a member of the Council of Upstate Ports of New York, a forum for discussion and resolution of problems common to New York's upstate port; it played a leading role in forming the Port of Buffalo Users Group, a cooperative unit formed by local shippers for consolidation of cargoes and inducement of regularly scheduled steamship services. The history of the Gateway Port of Buffalo over the past decade has shown steady improvement and expansion of Port facilities. With the future expected to emphasize energy efficient transportation modes ever more strongly, the Gateway Port of Buffalo has great potential for playing a primary role in the Buffalo area economy in coming years.

Fort Lauderdale, FL, United States

Originally known as Lake Mabel, Port Everglades was officially established as a deep water harbor in 1927 and has since grown to become one of South Florida's strongest economic engines with annual operating revenues of more than $66 million and total waterborne commerce exceeding 23 million tons in liquid, break bulk and containerized cargoes. More than 5,800 ships call at Port Everglades in a year forming the basis of a diverse maritime operation that includes a thriving cruise industry and a reputation as the "world's five-star cruise port," a growing containerized cargo business that establishes Port Everglades among the nation's top seaports, a major petroleum storage and distribution hub, South Florida's primary bulk cargo depot and a favorite U.S. Navy liberty port. The seaport is renowned for its commitment to ongoing capital improvements, environmental protection and convenient maritime operations with unbeatable connections through the adjacent Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport and the direct links with all of Florida's highway system via I-595. Where Exactly Is Port Everglades? Its name somewhat misleading, Port Everglades is not a part of the wetland ecosystem known as the Florida Everglades. The seaport is, in fact, located on the southeastern coast of the Florida peninsula within the three cities of Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood and Dania Beach, as well as unincorporated Broward County. It is approximately 23 miles north of Miami, 48 miles south of West Palm Beach and 312 miles south of Jacksonville. Port Everglades' jurisdiction encompasses a total of 2,190 acres (887hectares) which includes 1,742 acres of upland and 448 acres of submergedland. Upland acreage falls within the following municipalities: 1,242 acres or 71.3% of Port Everglades is located within the City of Hollywood. 232 acres or 13.3% is located within the City of Fort Lauderdale. 234 acres or 13.4% is located within the City of Dania Beach. 34 acres or 2% is located within unincorporated Broward County.

Providence, RI, United States

The Port of Providence is one of the oldest operating ports in the United States. First utilized by colonial commerce, it has progressed to its current status as the premier bulk and speciality cargo facility serving the northeastern region of the Untied States. In addition, ProvPort has over 300,000 square feet of warehouse space, generous outside storage areas, railroad access to all major, national lines, heavy lifting capacity, and a productive and flexible work force. ProvPort's occupies over 105 acres immediately adjacent to its berths. Some of the area is leased to major international and local corporations, including: Univar USA is a packager and distributor for specialty chemicals utilized by manufacturers and water agencies throughout New England. Univar's administrative headquarters, processing plant and distribution facility are located within and adjacent to ProvPort. TEPPCO is a subsidiary unit of Duke Energy. Their ProvPort facility stands as the major distribution terminal for propane throughout TEPPCO's New England market. The new dome structure can hold in excess of 35,000 tons of cement that can then be distributed via truck and rail its customer in the region. Metals Recycling has been an active tenant of the port since the mid-1980's. Its facility receives various grades of scrap metal for export by both barge and vessel. Metals' is jointly owned by local interests along with the Hugo Neu Corporation and Snitzer Steel, both nationally recognized scrap metal processors. Morton Salt recently signed a long-term lease with ProvPort. This action establishes ProvPort as its major distribution point for road salt. Morton Salt is the major supplier of road salt to governmental jurisdictions and private entities in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut.
