M ARACHART SHIPPING Co. LTD is the spine-bone of the RAISSIS GROUP OF COMPANIES, which was initially established in Beirut, Lebanon in the mid 20's by the late Leonidas Raissis under the style L. RAISSIS SHIPPING AGENCY. In 1964 under the style MARASHIP (L. RAISSIS SONS) a branch office in Piraeus was established by George L.Raissis who in 1974 changed the style to MARACHART SHIPPING Co. LTD and in 1976, after the bombing of the Beirut premises, became the headquarters for all business. MARACHART SHIPPING Co. LTD is a Cypriot company registered in Greece under compulsory Law 89 of 1967 (for offshore companies). MARACHART SHIPPING Co. LTD, has been a member of BIMCO since 1970 as well as of the HELLENIC SHIPBROKERS ASSOCIATION. The company's philosophy lies in its traditional values and its commitment to ensure correct and reliable work, as a consequence of which it has developed and acquired trust and respect in the shipping field. The chairman is Mr. George Raissis, whose experience in shipping goes back to 1959 when he joined his father's office in Beirut.The Vice President & Managing Director is Mr. Tassos Raissis who started his career in MARACHART SHIPPING Co. LTD in 1989. With a short break from 1992-94, when he joined Anderson Hughes & Co Ltd in London aiming to acquire experience in the London and international markets. In 1994 he rejoined MARACHART SHIPPING Co. LTD. Since its foundation, MARACHART SHIPPING Co. LTD has been offering the full range of shipping services in the competitive market, shipping more than 800,000 MT of various dry cargoes on a yearly basis. MARACHART SHIPPING Co. LTD is handling many exclusive and semi-exclusive accounts and is representing in GREECE Messers GEZACHART SHIPPING and GEZAIRI TRANSPORT, the two major Lebanese companies in the industry, with whom the group has business relations for over half a century. SKS OBO Limited, Bermuda, is a joint venture company owned by subsidiaries of Kristian Gerhard Jebsen Skipsrederi A/S, Norway(KGJS), and Compañia SudAmericana de Vapores S.A., Chile (CSAV). SKS OBO Limited controls 10 110,000deadweight and 1 96,000deadweight Ore-Bulk-Oil (OBO) Carriers. The concept of ships that are able to load both wet and dry cargoes is not new, however it has been refined in recent years to counter the operational shortcomings of earlier generations of such vessel. The criticisms levelled at older generations of OBOs have been answered one by one by the design of the vessels in the SKS fleet. Technical Management of the SKS fleet is handled by V.Ships Norway in Oslo. Commercial Management with Pine Limited in Bermuda, who through an agency agreement have appointed Pelican Shipping Limited in London as their Commercial Managers. KGJS has interests in other shipping companies, of which Gearbulk is probably the most well known. This makes possible certain economies of scale and a pool of knowledge in specific areas, of which SKS is able to take advantage. Both KGJS and CSAV are visionary companies with plans for the future. KGJS had ordered from Hyundai Heavy Industries in Korea a further two OBO carriers of 121,000dwt as well as a number of 160,000dwt Suezmax tankers for delivery during 2003. These will be commercially managed by Pelican Shipping Limited alongside the SKS OBOs.
