The AVECS Corporation AG is a software company developing quality & safety management software for the marine industry in accordance with ISO 9001. The company was founded in 1994 as a two-man company based in Potsdam. The ever-increasing rate of accidents at sea and falling safety standards gave Captain Hans-Werner Schleiter the idea to try and change this situation by developing specialised safety software. The concept was based on the then new international legislation (ISM - International Safety Management Code), introduced to improve safety onboard ships worldwide. During the development of the system, experts from maritime industry, nautical universities and software ergonomics were involved. Test installations onboard ensured that the functionality required by users was available in a user-friendly interface. The AVECS Corporation currently employs around 50 people, some of whom with extensive seagoing experience.

Calcutta, India, India

Calcutta port started operations in 1870. It was initially designed by the then British Government in line with the Port of London, to take care of its business and colonial interest. Despite innumerable odds faced by the port since its inception, it used to enjoy a premier position amongst the major ports of India and accounted for nearly 50% of the sea-borne trade till independence. However, with the rapid industrialisation in Western India concomitant to gradual deterioration of the industrial sector in Eastern India, the glory of this grand port has been outstripped. Calcutta port, the only riverine major port in India has two docking arms the Calcutta Dock System (CDS) and Haldia Dock Complex (HDC). CDS with its impounded docking arrangement, is located within Calcutta city and connected to Bay of Bengal through 156 nautical miles long navigational channel through river Hooghly. The Hooghly channel, longest ever riverine waterway used by ocean-going vessels, is infamous for its traps, siltations and known to maritime world as one of the highly unpredictable and risky navigational route. HDC is located at the bank of river Hooghly and Haldi, has started operations in 1968 as a satellite port of CDS. It also operates through impounded docking arrangement due to low river draft. The port serves to a vast hinterland, which includes states of West Bengal, Bihar, Orissa, Eastern Uttar Pradesh, states of North-East India and the two land-locked nations of Nepal and Bhutan. Future plan Calcutta Port has outlined expansion plan for handling 50 million tonnes of cargo by 2000-01. The port is considering a fourth oil jetty to handle projected POL traffic.

Wichita,, KS, United States

At Celestaire, we feel the science and art of navigation is of fundamental importance on all voyages whether on land, sea, or in the air. We think the celestial way, although ancient in origin, is still the most exciting way to navigate. It can be done anywhere with complete self-sufficiency, AND it can be practiced in one's own backyard. Our curious land-locked status began from selling government surplus aircraft sextants in Wichita in 1972. Although we still feature some of these, we began adding marine sextants and other unusual items not to be found elsewhere. Today we process more sextants than any other single firm in the world. In our catalog, our prices are among the lowest to be found anywhere. We have attempted to discuss the merits of each product, and to give our recommendations so that you can choose those that suit your needs best. Celestaire is staffed by people who are experienced in marine and air navigation, and of course, our specialty is celestial. We have flown by it, and sailed by it, and would be happy to discuss your particular requirements.
