Advantage Tankers Diversifies Fleet Strategy with MR Quartet Order at GSI

By MGN Editorial•September 15, 2026 at 11:43 AM

Geneva-based Advantage Tankers has placed an order for four MR product tankers at Guangzhou Shipyard International, marking a significant strategic shift as the owner expands beyond its established focus on larger crude tanker tonnage.

Geneva-headquartered Advantage Tankers has ordered four medium range (MR) product tankers at Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI), according to Splash247, broadening a newbuilding programme that has until now been centred predominantly on VLCCs and suezmaxes. Newbuilding sources cited by Splash247 have identified the Tugrul Tokgoz-led owner as the party behind the four vessels, each of approximately 50,000 dwt. The order represents a notable diversification in fleet strategy for Advantage Tankers, which has built its identity around larger crude-carrying tonnage. ## Strategic Shift Toward Product Tankers The move into MR product tankers signals growing owner confidence in the refined products segment, which has demonstrated robust earnings performance in recent years driven by shifting refinery capacity, evolving trade flows, and sustained demand for clean petroleum products across key import markets. MR tankers — typically ranging between 45,000 and 55,000 dwt — are workhorses of the product tanker sector, serving a wide range of routes including transatlantic gasoline trades, intra-Asian refined product movements, and naphtha cargoes. Their versatility and relatively lower capital cost compared to larger vessel classes make them an attractive addition to a diversified tanker portfolio. GSI, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), is an established builder of product and chemical tankers, making it a logical choice for an owner entering this vessel segment. ## Market Context The order comes amid continued appetite among tanker owners to lock in newbuilding slots as shipyard capacity tightens globally. Orderbook positions at major yards are increasingly limited through 2027 and into 2028, adding urgency for owners seeking fleet renewal or expansion. Advantage Tankers' decision to add smaller tonnage alongside its larger crude carrier programme reflects a broader industry trend of owners hedging across tanker sub-sectors to balance exposure to crude and clean product markets. Further details regarding delivery schedules and contract values have not yet been disclosed. The maritime industry will be watching closely to see whether this MR order marks the beginning of a more sustained push into the product tanker space for the Geneva-based owner.
