AFRY Secures Technical Advisory Role on Vietnam's 1.5 GW LNG-to-Power Project
By MGN Editorial•August 31, 2026 at 12:00 PM
Swedish engineering firm AFRY has been appointed as technical advisor on an integrated floating LNG terminal and gas-fired power plant development in Vietnam, marking a significant step forward for the 1.5 GW project.
## AFRY Appointed Technical Advisor on Major Vietnam LNG-to-Power Development
Swedish engineering, design, and advisory firm AFRY has secured a key technical advisory role on a 1.5 GW liquefied natural gas (LNG)-to-power project in Vietnam, according to Offshore Energy. The appointment positions AFRY at the centre of one of Southeast Asia's more ambitious integrated energy infrastructure developments.
The project combines a floating LNG (FLNG) terminal with a gas-fired power plant, representing the kind of integrated LNG supply and generation solution that has gained traction across Southeast Asia as nations seek to diversify their energy mix and meet growing electricity demand.
### Strategic Significance for Vietnam's Energy Sector
Vietnam has been actively expanding its LNG import infrastructure as part of a broader national energy transition strategy. The country's Power Development Plan VIII, approved in 2023, outlines a significant role for LNG-fired generation as a transition fuel alongside accelerating renewables deployment. Projects of this scale are central to that ambition, helping to bridge the gap between Vietnam's rapidly growing power demand and its domestic gas supply constraints.
The use of a floating LNG terminal — rather than a conventional onshore regasification facility — reflects both the practical challenges of coastal infrastructure development in the region and the increasing commercial maturity of FLNG technology as a faster-to-deploy import solution.
### AFRY's Role
AFRY's technical advisory mandate is expected to cover engineering oversight and due diligence across the integrated project scope. The firm brings established expertise in LNG infrastructure and power generation projects across global markets. Securing this role reinforces AFRY's presence in the Southeast Asian energy sector, where demand for independent technical advisory services on complex LNG developments continues to grow.
The project adds to a pipeline of LNG import and power generation developments across Vietnam, the Philippines, and other ASEAN markets where energy security concerns and decarbonisation commitments are driving investment in gas infrastructure as a complement to intermittent renewable generation.
