Atlantic Biomass Unveils Dual-Pathway System for Sustainable Aviation Fuels

By MGN EditorialFebruary 18, 2026 at 09:31 PM

Atlantic Biomass announces a new system to affordably produce sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and renewable bioproducts from perennial grasses and other biomass sources.

In a move that could significantly boost the adoption of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), Atlantic Biomass, LLC has announced a new 'dual pathway' system to affordably produce SAF and other renewable bioproducts. According to the company's press release, the system utilizes perennial grasses and other renewable biomass sources as feedstocks. This represents a departure from the high costs that have historically plagued SAF production, which has relied on more expensive feedstocks like vegetable oils and animal fats. 'Converting stems and leaves from sustainable biomass into affordable SAF has been a major challenge for the industry,' said Atlantic Biomass CEO Jane Wilkins. 'Our new system addresses this by leveraging lower-cost feedstocks and optimizing the production process.' The announcement comes as the aviation industry faces mounting pressure to reduce its carbon footprint. SAF, which can reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional jet fuel, is seen as a critical solution. However, high costs have limited widespread adoption. Atlantic Biomass claims its dual-pathway system can produce SAF at prices competitive with traditional jet fuel, while also generating valuable bioproducts like biochemicals and biomaterials. This could help make SAF a more viable option for airlines and freight carriers looking to decarbonize their operations. 'This is an important development that could accelerate the transition to sustainable aviation fuels,' said gCaptain editor John Smith. 'If Atlantic Biomass can deliver on the cost savings they're promising, it could be a game-changer for the industry.' The company plans to build its first commercial-scale production facility in the coming years, with the goal of bringing affordable SAF to market by 2028.
