Aurora Innovation Eyes $80M Revenue Run-Rate as Autonomous Freight Push Continues
By MGN Editorial•August 1, 2026 at 06:00 PM
Aurora Innovation has outlined its per-mile pricing strategy and revenue targets for its driverless trucking service, despite reporting a $270 million loss in Q2 2025.
Autonomous trucking developer Aurora Innovation has detailed its commercial roadmap and per-mile revenue outlook as it works toward a planned transition to a driver-as-a-service (DaaS) model by 2027, according to FreightWaves.
The company reported a net loss of $270 million for the second quarter, a figure that reflects the substantial capital investment required to bring fully driverless commercial freight operations to scale. Despite the headline loss, Aurora said it expects to reach an $80 million Transportation-as-a-Service (TaaS) annual revenue run-rate by the end of the year — a milestone the company is positioning as a key indicator of commercial momentum.
Aurora's disclosure of per-mile pricing metrics is significant for the broader freight and logistics sector, as it offers one of the clearest windows yet into the unit economics underpinning autonomous trucking at commercial scale. The company operates two distinct business models, and executives used the Q2 earnings call to outline how per-mile revenues are expected to evolve across both ahead of the 2027 DaaS transition.
The shift to a driver-as-a-service framework — in which Aurora would supply autonomous driving technology to fleet operators rather than running trucks directly — represents a capital-lighter growth strategy that the company hopes will accelerate adoption among established carriers and shippers.
While Aurora is primarily a road freight technology company, its progress carries implications for intermodal and port drayage operations, where autonomous trucking could eventually reshape last-mile container movements and terminal logistics. Port authorities and freight forwarders with significant drayage exposure have been monitoring autonomous trucking developments closely as the technology edges toward commercial viability.
The Q2 results underscore the financial intensity of the autonomous vehicle sector, with Aurora burning through significant capital as it scales operations. Investors and industry observers will be watching whether the projected $80 million run-rate materialises as a proof point that the TaaS model can generate sustainable returns ahead of the broader DaaS pivot.
