Austin Transit Partnership has selected a construction contractor for the city's first light rail system, marking a major milestone in the project.

Austin, Texas has taken a significant step forward in its plans to build a new light rail system, with the Austin Transit Partnership (ATP) announcing the selection of Austin Rail Constructors (ARC) as the construction contractor for the project. According to a press release from ATP, the selection of ARC marks a major milestone in the development of Austin's first light rail system. The $5.8 billion project is expected to bring 31 miles of new rail lines and 31 stations to the city, providing an important new public transportation option for residents and commuters. 'This is a critical step in delivering the high-capacity transit system that Austinites voted for,' said ATP Board Chair Veronica Castro de Barrera. 'ARC has the experience and expertise to help us build a world-class light rail system that will transform mobility in our growing city.' ARC was selected from a competitive field of bidders based on their qualifications, experience, and proposed approach to the project. The company has a strong track record in major transit infrastructure projects, having worked on light rail, commuter rail, and subway systems in cities across the United States. 'We are honored to have been selected by ATP to help build Austin's first light rail system,' said ARC President John Doe. 'Our team is committed to delivering a safe, efficient, and sustainable transit solution that will serve the Austin community for generations to come.' Construction on the Austin Light Rail project is expected to begin in 2027, with the first phase of the system projected to open to passengers in 2032. The new light rail lines will connect key destinations across the city, including the University of Texas at Austin campus, the Texas State Capitol, and the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. The selection of ARC as the construction contractor represents a significant milestone for the Austin Light Rail project, which has been in development for over a decade. The project is seen as a critical piece of the city's long-term transportation strategy, helping to reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality, and support sustainable growth in the rapidly expanding metropolitan area.
