Autonomous Trucks and Shipping Consolidation: Key Maritime Industry Developments
By MGN Editorial•March 11, 2026 at 12:34 PM
A roundup of recent news on autonomous trucking legislation and shipping company consolidation in the maritime industry.
## Autonomous Trucks on the Horizon?
According to *FreightWaves*, a new bill moving through the U.S. House of Representatives could pave the way for fully autonomous heavy-duty trucks on public roads. The SELF DRIVE Act of 2026 would establish the first federal framework for deploying driverless 80,000-pound trucks.
While proponents argue this could improve efficiency and safety, the prospect has raised concerns among smaller trucking carriers. They worry autonomous trucks could disrupt the industry and put them at a competitive disadvantage against larger players with the resources to adopt the new technology.
The bill is still in the early stages, but its introduction signals autonomous trucking is an emerging issue the maritime sector will need to monitor closely. As the supply chain becomes increasingly integrated, changes in one mode of transportation can have ripple effects across the entire logistics ecosystem.
## ONE Boosts Stake in Seaspan Parent
In other news, container shipping giant Ocean Network Express (ONE) has increased its ownership stake in Seaspan Corporation, the parent company of major containership lessor Seaspan, according to *The Journal of Commerce*.
The investment, potentially valued at close to $1 billion, is part of ONE's strategy to reach 3 million TEUs in capacity by 2030 through a combination of owned and chartered vessels. Securing access to Seaspan's fleet gives ONE more control over its supply of containerships as the industry continues to consolidate.
"This investment underscores ONE's commitment to our long-term partnership and aligns with our strategy to build a resilient and sustainable business," said ONE CEO Jeremy Nixon.
Vertical integration and consolidation have been major trends in container shipping in recent years as carriers seek to gain scale and market power. This latest move by ONE demonstrates how leading players are maneuvering to solidify their positions in the evolving maritime landscape.
