BAE Systems Advances to Phase 2 of DARPA's THREADS Program, Pushing Boundaries of RF Electronics for Defence Applications
By MGN Editorial•August 12, 2026 at 06:00 PM
BAE Systems has successfully completed Phase 1 of DARPA's THREADS program, progressing to Phase 2 as the initiative seeks to overcome temperature limitations in advanced radio frequency electronics with potential implications for naval and maritime defence systems.
BAE Systems has advanced to Phase 2 of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA) THREADS program, following the successful completion of its initial research phase, the company announced via PR Newswire on 12 August 2026.
The THREADS program — conducted through BAE Systems' FAST Labs™ research, development and production organisation based in Nashua, New Hampshire — is focused on addressing critical temperature limitations that currently constrain the performance of advanced radio frequency (RF) electronics. Overcoming these thermal barriers is considered essential to developing next-generation electronic warfare, radar, and communications systems.
'This progression to Phase 2 represents a significant milestone in our efforts to push the boundaries of what RF electronics can achieve under demanding operational conditions,' the company indicated in its announcement.
While the THREADS program is primarily a defence-oriented research initiative, its technological outcomes carry broader relevance for the maritime sector. Naval vessels increasingly depend on sophisticated RF-based systems for radar, electronic warfare, satellite communications, and integrated bridge systems. Advances in high-temperature-tolerant RF electronics could translate directly into more resilient and capable shipboard electronics, particularly for vessels operating in extreme environmental conditions or high-electromagnetic-demand scenarios.
BAE Systems is a major supplier to naval programmes across NATO member states, and research conducted through DARPA partnerships frequently informs the development of next-generation warship systems. The FAST Labs™ division serves as the company's primary vehicle for translating cutting-edge research into deployable defence technologies.
DARPA's THREADS program is part of a broader US defence research effort to maintain technological superiority in the electromagnetic spectrum — an area of growing strategic competition. Phase 2 of the programme is expected to involve more advanced prototype development and performance validation under operationally relevant conditions.
Further details on programme timelines and deliverables have not been publicly disclosed, consistent with the sensitive nature of DARPA-funded defence research.
