## Battery Recycling Education Gap Highlighted in New Industry Research
A new study from battery recycling specialist Cirba Solutions has found that despite near-universal daily use of lithium-powered devices, the majority of Americans remain poorly informed about proper battery recycling practices — a knowledge gap that carries implications beyond the consumer sector, including for the rapidly electrifying maritime industry.
According to the Charlotte, North Carolina-based firm, 99 percent of Americans use a lithium-powered device every day, yet most lack awareness of how to responsibly dispose of or recycle spent batteries. Cirba Solutions, which operates one of North America's largest battery recycling networks, says it is expanding both educational outreach and physical recycling access points in response to the findings.
### Relevance to Maritime Operations
For maritime industry professionals, the research arrives at a critical juncture. Ports, ferry operators, offshore service vessels, and inland waterway fleets are increasingly integrating lithium-ion battery systems — from hybrid propulsion units and energy storage systems (ESS) to handheld crew equipment and emergency devices. The safe handling, storage, and end-of-life disposal of these batteries represents a growing operational and regulatory concern.
Battery fires aboard vessels and at port facilities have drawn heightened scrutiny from flag state authorities and classification societies in recent years, with incidents linked in part to improper storage and disposal of degraded lithium cells. Industry bodies including the International Maritime Organization (IMO) have been developing guidance on the carriage and management of lithium batteries, reflecting the scale of the challenge.
### Circular Economy Pressures Mount
The Cirba Solutions findings also underscore broader circular economy pressures facing the maritime supply chain. As shipowners invest in battery-electric and hybrid vessels to meet decarbonisation targets under the IMO's 2023 Greenhouse Gas Strategy, the question of what happens to battery packs at end-of-life is becoming commercially and environmentally significant.
Recycling infrastructure capable of processing large-format marine battery systems remains limited globally, and the industry is watching closely as regulatory frameworks — particularly in the European Union under the new Battery Regulation — begin to mandate recycled content thresholds and supply chain due diligence.
Cirba Solutions' push to improve consumer-level recycling education may represent a modest step, but analysts note that awareness and infrastructure investment at all levels of the battery value chain will be essential as maritime electrification accelerates through the late 2020s.
