Belgium Seizes Russian Shadow Fleet Tanker Linked to Iran

By MGN EditorialMarch 2, 2026 at 11:05 AM

Belgian authorities have seized a Russian-owned tanker in the North Sea as part of coordinated European sanctions enforcement.

In a move to enforce European sanctions against Russia, Belgian forces have boarded and seized the shadow fleet tanker Ethera in the North Sea. The vessel, which is linked to Iran, was escorted to the port of Zeebrugge by Belgian authorities. According to gCaptain, the Ethera is part of a 'shadow fleet' of tankers that have been used to transport Russian oil in violation of sanctions. The seizure was described as a 'coordinated European action' targeting vessels that have been involved in schemes to bypass sanctions on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine. 'This is an important step in the enforcement of the sanctions regime against Russia,' said a spokesperson for the Belgian Federal Public Service Economy. 'We will continue to work with our European partners to identify and seize any assets linked to individuals or entities supporting the Russian war effort.' The Ethera had been operating without broadcasting its location, a common tactic used by the shadow fleet to avoid detection. Its seizure is the latest in a series of actions taken by Western nations to clamp down on Russia's ability to export its oil and generate revenue amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. As the maritime industry navigates the complex sanctions landscape, further interdictions of Russian-linked vessels are likely in the months ahead. Cargo owners, ship operators, and financial institutions will need to exercise heightened due diligence to ensure compliance and avoid potential penalties.
