Biogas Market Surges Amid Decarbonization Push
By MGN Editorial•March 5, 2026 at 10:45 AM
The global biogas market is projected to grow from 21.65 GW in 2025 to 28.34 GW by 2031, driven by strong policy incentives and decarbonization targets.
The global biogas market is poised for significant growth in the coming years, according to the latest insights from Mordor Intelligence. The market is expected to rise from 21.65 GW in 2025 to 22.64 GW in 2026, and then reach 28.34 GW by 2031 - reflecting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.59%.
This momentum is being driven by 'strong policy incentives and growing decarbonization targets' across the maritime and energy sectors, the research firm reported. Biogas, which is produced from the anaerobic digestion of organic matter, is increasingly seen as a key renewable fuel that can help industries reduce their carbon footprint.
'The maritime industry in particular has been exploring the use of biogas as a cleaner alternative to traditional marine fuels,' said gCaptain, a leading maritime news source. 'As regulations tighten on emissions, we're likely to see more ships turning to biogas and other low-carbon energy sources to power their operations.'
In addition to the maritime sector, the Mordor Intelligence report highlights growing demand for biogas in power generation, heating, and transportation applications. 'Governments around the world are implementing policies to incentivize the production and use of biogas,' noted The Maritime Executive. 'This is a trend that is expected to continue in the coming years as the push for decarbonization accelerates.'
Overall, the findings suggest the global biogas market is poised for robust growth as industries seek to reduce their environmental impact and meet ambitious climate goals. Maritime companies and other stakeholders will need to closely monitor these developments to stay ahead of the curve.
