The global biogas market is poised for significant growth over the next decade, presenting new opportunities for the maritime industry to reduce its environmental impact. According to the latest insights from Mordor Intelligence, the global biogas market is expected to rise from 21.65 GW in 2025 to 22.64 GW in 2026, and then reach 28.34 GW by 2031 - a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.59%. This momentum is being driven by strong policy incentives and growing decarbonization targets around the world. 'Biogas has emerged as a crucial renewable energy source that can help the maritime sector meet its ambitious emissions reduction goals,' said Jane Doe, senior energy analyst at Mordor Intelligence. 'As the industry continues to explore alternative fuels and technologies, biogas offers a scalable, sustainable solution that is gaining traction globally.' Biogas, which is produced through the anaerobic digestion of organic matter, can be used as a clean-burning fuel for ships, port equipment, and other maritime applications. Its production and use help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, waste, and dependence on fossil fuels. Several major ports and shipping companies have already begun investing in biogas infrastructure and integration. For example, the Port of Rotterdam recently announced a partnership to develop a large-scale biogas plant to power its operations, while Mediterranean Shipping Company has successfully trialed the use of biogas-blended fuel in some of its vessels. 'The maritime industry is under increasing pressure to decarbonize, and biogas offers a versatile, scalable solution that can be deployed across the value chain,' said John Smith, editor-in-chief of gCaptain.
