Chevron and Helleniq Energy have won leases to explore four offshore blocks in Greece, expanding their presence in the region.
In a significant development for the Greek offshore energy sector, U.S. oil major Chevron and Greek energy company Helleniq Energy have secured leases to explore four offshore blocks in the country.
According to an announcement from Offshore Energy, Chevron, through its four Dutch subsidiaries, and Helleniq Energy have signed lease agreements with the Hellenic Hydrocarbon Resources Management (HHRM) to explore the blocks located in the Ionian Sea and the Gulf of Patras.
The exploration leases cover a total area of approximately 6,671 square kilometers and mark an important step forward for both companies as they look to expand their presence in the Greek offshore energy market.
'This is a significant milestone for Chevron as we continue to build our portfolio in the Eastern Mediterranean region,' said a Chevron spokesperson. 'We look forward to working closely with our partner Helleniq Energy and the Greek government to responsibly explore and develop these offshore blocks.'
Helleniq Energy, formerly known as Hellenic Petroleum, also expressed enthusiasm about the new exploration venture. 'This agreement strengthens our position as a leading player in the Greek energy market and aligns with our strategy to grow our upstream portfolio,' said a Helleniq Energy representative.
The announcement comes as Greece continues to position itself as an emerging energy hub in the Eastern Mediterranean, with several major oil and gas companies active in the country's offshore sector. The successful lease awards to Chevron and Helleniq Energy underscore the country's efforts to attract investment and develop its hydrocarbon resources.
As the maritime industry closely monitors developments in the Greek offshore energy landscape, this latest news from Chevron and Helleniq Energy is sure to be of keen interest to industry stakeholders.
