Maritime Industry Briefing: China Merchants Moves on Antong, SK Shipping Eyes Asia LNG Leadership
By MGN Editorial•August 13, 2026 at 12:00 PM
China Merchants Group renews its bid for control of container shipping firm Antong Holdings, while South Korea's SK Shipping positions itself as a top Asian LNG carrier operator through a major fleet reshuffle with H-Line Shipping.
## China Merchants Closes In on Antong Control
China Merchants Group has revived its push to take control of domestic container shipping and logistics operator Antong Holdings, more than a year after an earlier restructuring attempt collapsed, according to Splash247.
China Merchants Energy Shipping has disclosed that its wholly owned subsidiary Sinotrans Container Lines has accumulated 632.25 million Antong shares, signalling a renewed and determined effort to consolidate its grip on the Chinese coastal and short-sea shipping market. The move reflects Beijing's broader industrial policy of consolidating state-linked shipping assets under fewer, larger entities capable of competing on a national and international scale.
Antong Holdings is one of China's more prominent domestic container shipping and port logistics players, and a successful takeover by China Merchants — one of the country's most powerful state-owned conglomerates — would further concentrate market power in the sector. The earlier restructuring attempt's failure had cast doubt on the deal's viability, making this renewed accumulation of shares a significant development to watch for industry observers tracking consolidation trends in Chinese shipping.

## SK Shipping Targets Asia LNG Top Spot in H-Line Fleet Swap
In a major strategic realignment within South Korea's shipping sector, SK Shipping is set to double its LNG carrier fleet to 32 vessels through a 28-ship reshuffle with sister company H-Line Shipping, Splash247 reports.
Private equity owner Hahn & Co has structured the deal so that SK Shipping will absorb 16 LNG carriers along with their associated long-term charters from H-Line, in exchange for transferring 12 tankers and related assets back to H-Line. The transaction effectively concentrates LNG shipping expertise and capacity within SK Shipping, while allowing H-Line to sharpen its focus on the tanker segment.
The deal positions SK Shipping as a leading LNG carrier operator in Asia, a strategically important designation as regional demand for liquefied natural gas continues to grow amid the global energy transition. Long-term charter contracts attached to the transferred vessels provide revenue visibility and underpin the commercial rationale for the consolidation.
The move is emblematic of a wider trend among Korean shipping groups to rationalise fleets and concentrate specialised tonnage under single operating entities, improving operational efficiency and competitive positioning in global energy shipping markets.
