CMA CGM Moves to Acquire Aircraft Maintenance Firm in Air Cargo Push

By MGN EditorialJune 16, 2026 at 12:00 PM

French shipping giant CMA CGM has signed a preliminary agreement to acquire Crystal Aero Solutions, a move that signals the group's continued commitment to building out its integrated air freight capabilities.

CMA CGM is pressing ahead with its diversification into air cargo with a planned acquisition of Crystal Aero Solutions, a French aircraft maintenance specialist that already provides technical support to the Marseille-based group's expanding freighter fleet, according to Splash247. The transport and logistics conglomerate has signed a preliminary agreement to take over Crystal Aero Solutions, though financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed. The target company's existing relationship with CMA CGM's air operations makes the acquisition a logical vertical integration step, enabling the group to bring critical maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) capabilities in-house. The move is the latest in a series of strategic investments by CMA CGM's air division, CMA CGM Air Cargo, which was established in 2021 and has grown rapidly to operate a fleet of freighter aircraft serving key global trade lanes. By securing its own MRO capacity, the group aims to reduce operational dependency on third-party service providers, improve aircraft availability, and better control costs across its air freight network. The acquisition reflects a broader trend among major container shipping lines to leverage record profits earned during the pandemic-era freight boom to fund diversification into adjacent logistics segments. CMA CGM, led by chairman and CEO Rodolphe Saadé, has been among the most aggressive in this regard, having also expanded into port terminals, rail, road transport, and media. For the maritime industry, the deal underscores how the boundaries between ocean shipping and multimodal logistics continue to blur, with leading carriers positioning themselves as end-to-end supply chain operators rather than pure-play vessel operators. The transaction remains subject to customary regulatory approvals and the completion of due diligence before it can be finalised.
