CMA CGM Expands India Presence with LNG Ships and R&D Hub

By MGN EditorialFebruary 19, 2026 at 02:21 AM

French shipping giant CMA CGM is strengthening its ties with India, ordering six LNG-powered containerships from Cochin Shipyard and launching a new R&D hub in the country.

In a move to deepen its footprint in the Indian market, CMA CGM has finalized shipbuilding contracts with Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) for six LNG-powered containerships. The vessels will have a capacity of 15,000 TEUs each and are expected to be delivered between 2025 and 2026. This order builds on CMA CGM's existing relationship with India, where the company already operates a fleet of 21 vessels. The new LNG-powered ships will help CMA CGM meet its sustainability goals by reducing emissions along key trade routes. Alongside the shipbuilding deal, CMA CGM has also launched a dedicated Research & Development hub in India. The new facility will focus on developing innovative solutions for the maritime industry, with a particular emphasis on decarbonization technologies. 'India is a strategic market for the CMA CGM Group, and these new investments reflect our strong commitment to the country,' said Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and CEO of CMA CGM. 'The new LNG-powered vessels and our R&D hub will strengthen our presence in India and support the country's economic development.' The moves come as CMA CGM continues to position itself as a leader in sustainable shipping. The company has pledged to be net-zero carbon by 2050 and has been investing heavily in alternative fuels like LNG. The new Indian initiatives are part of this broader strategy to reduce the environmental impact of its global operations. According to gCaptain, the LNG ship order and R&D hub announcement 'underscores CMA CGM's growing focus on the Indian market and its commitment to sustainability.' The investments are expected to further strengthen the company's position in the region and support India's ambitions to become a global maritime hub.
