French container line CMA CGM has signed contracts with Cochin Shipyard for six new vessels, a significant development in the global container shipping market.
In a major move that underscores the growing importance of the Indian shipbuilding industry, French container shipping giant CMA CGM has finalized contracts with Cochin Shipyard for the construction of six new container vessels.
According to the announcement from Seatrade Maritime, the order represents a landmark deal, as it marks the first time a major global container line has placed such a significant newbuild order with an Indian shipyard. The vessels will have a capacity of 8,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), placing them in the mid-size container ship segment.
'This is a historic moment for the Indian shipbuilding industry,' said Shri Madhu S Nair, Chairman and Managing Director of Cochin Shipyard Limited. 'The fact that a global leader like CMA CGM has entrusted us with this order is a testament to our shipbuilding capabilities and the continued growth of India's maritime sector.'
The new container ships are expected to be delivered between 2025 and 2026, and will be deployed on CMA CGM's global trade routes. This order represents a significant boost for Cochin Shipyard, which has been actively positioning itself as a competitive alternative to traditional shipbuilding hubs in Asia.
'This landmark order from CMA CGM is a major win for Indian shipbuilding and will help strengthen the country's position in the global container shipping market,' said Luc Tytgat, Secretary-General of the European Community Shipowners' Associations, in comments to *The Maritime Executive*. 'It demonstrates the growing capabilities of Indian yards and the increasing competitiveness of the Indian maritime industry on the world stage.'
The CMA CGM order comes at a time of heightened interest in diversifying global supply chains and production away from China, presenting opportunities for emerging shipbuilding centers like India. As the container shipping industry continues to navigate market volatility and evolving customer demands, this deal underscores the industry's willingness to explore new partnerships and innovative solutions.
