Container Rates Slide as Lunar New Year Demand Disappoints

By MGN EditorialFebruary 13, 2026 at 03:24 AM

Global container shipping rates have fallen for five consecutive weeks as the usual pre-Lunar New Year cargo surge failed to materialize, leading carriers to increase blank sailings.

Global container shipping rates have continued their downward slide for a fifth consecutive week, as the anticipated pre-Lunar New Year cargo surge failed to materialize, according to a report from maritime news site gCaptain. The slowdown in demand has prompted carriers to ramp up blank sailings across major trade lanes in an effort to prop up rates. Spot rates on the key Shanghai-Los Angeles route have fallen 7% over the past five weeks, while rates from Shanghai to North Europe are down 6% over the same period. "The usual pre-Lunar New Year cargo surge has not materialized this year, leading carriers to blank more sailings to try and prop up freight rates," gCaptain reported, citing industry analysts. Lunar New Year, which fell on January 22nd this year, is typically a peak shipping season as retailers and manufacturers rush to restock inventories ahead of the holiday. The softening in demand comes amid broader economic headwinds, including high inflation, rising interest rates, and concerns over a potential recession. Carriers have been quick to adjust capacity in response, with Maersk, MSC, and other major lines announcing a wave of blank sailings in recent weeks. While the current downturn in rates is putting pressure on container shipping profitability, analysts say the industry remains in a relatively strong position compared to previous cycles. Many carriers have maintained disciplined capacity management, and the lingering effects of pandemic-era supply chain disruptions continue to support elevated freight rates on a historical basis. "The container shipping market is cooling off, but it's still running hot compared to pre-pandemic norms," said one industry analyst quoted by gCaptain. "Carriers have learned from past mistakes and are moving quickly to adjust capacity in line with demand."
