Containership Loses Boxes in North Pacific Storm

By MGN EditorialMarch 19, 2026 at 12:12 PM

A large containership lost dozens of containers overboard in heavy weather while sailing south of the Aleutian Islands.

A Hong Kong-flagged containership, the OOCL Sunflower, has arrived at the Port of Long Beach after losing containers in a North Pacific storm, according to reports from [Splash247](https://splash247.com/oocl-sunflower-docks-in-long-beach-after-pacific-box-losses/). The 13,208 TEU vessel shed 32 containers overboard while sailing south of the Aleutian Islands on March 1st. The U.S. Coast Guard was notified and responded to the incident. 'The OOCL Sunflower arrived at the Port of Long Beach on March 6th, where it is currently being inspected,' a port spokesperson told [Splash247](https://splash247.com/oocl-sunflower-docks-in-long-beach-after-pacific-box-losses/). 'The cause of the container loss is under investigation.' Container losses at sea have been an ongoing challenge for the shipping industry, with thousands of boxes going overboard each year due to factors like poor lashing, extreme weather, and vessel instability. This latest incident highlights the risks that containerships face, especially in the treacherous North Pacific waters. Shipping lines and ports will need to continue working to improve container securing and response protocols to mitigate these types of accidents.
