EMEC Secures £15M to Expand Tidal Energy Test Facilities

By MGN EditorialFebruary 20, 2026 at 02:00 PM

The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) has secured £15 million in funding to expand its tidal energy test facilities in Scotland.

The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) has secured a £15 million (around €17.5 million) investment to expand its tidal energy test facilities in Orkney, Scotland, according to Offshore Energy. The funding will be used to develop new berths and infrastructure at EMEC's Fall of Warness tidal test site, which has been in operation since 2005. This will allow EMEC to accommodate larger and more powerful tidal energy devices, supporting the continued growth and development of the tidal energy sector. 'This investment will enable EMEC to expand its world-leading tidal test facilities, providing developers with the infrastructure they need to test, demonstrate and validate their technologies at scale,' said Neil Kermode, Managing Director of EMEC. 'It's an important step forward in supporting the commercialization of tidal energy.' The project is being funded by the UK Government through the Net Zero Innovation Portfolio, as well as the European Regional Development Fund and Highlands and Islands Enterprise. It aligns with the UK's goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050 and positioning the country as a global leader in offshore renewable energy. EMEC has been at the forefront of marine energy development for over 20 years, hosting a range of wave and tidal energy converters from developers around the world. This latest expansion will cement the facility's status as a critical hub for testing and validating next-generation tidal energy technologies.
