Equinor, Petoro and OMV Make Oil & Gas Discovery Off Bergen

By MGN EditorialFebruary 16, 2026 at 03:23 PM

Equinor and partners Petoro and OMV have made a new oil and gas discovery in waters off Bergen, Norway.

Equinor and its partners Petoro and OMV have made an oil & gas discovery in the North Sea off the coast of Bergen, Norway, according to an announcement from Equinor. The discovery, named Kveikje, is located in production license 293 B in the Troll area. Preliminary estimates indicate the discovery contains between 19 and 56 million standard cubic meters (MSm3) of recoverable oil equivalent. "Kveikje is an important discovery that can be developed efficiently by utilizing existing infrastructure in the Troll and Oseberg areas," said Grete B. Haaland, Equinor's senior vice president for exploration and production north. The discovery was made by the Deepsea Stavanger semi-submersible rig, which will now move on to drill another exploration well. Equinor operates the license with a 51% stake, while Petoro holds 30% and OMV 19%. The Troll and Oseberg areas are major producing regions for Equinor, accounting for a significant portion of Norway's overall oil and gas output. Developing new discoveries near existing infrastructure can allow for faster, more cost-effective production. According to gCaptain, the discovery comes as Equinor and other major oil companies have been focusing exploration efforts on near-field opportunities that can leverage existing assets, rather than pursuing riskier frontier plays. This strategy helps maximize returns in the current market environment.
